Queenstown New Zealand

Queenstown New Zealand is located on the South Island. The adventure sports capital of the world some call it. Biking, skydiving, hiking and good food options scattered thought the downtown area, it’s a great place for anyone looking to get outside. New Zealand’s season are the opposite of ours in the U.S. If you wanna keep riding year round November to March is going to offer some great weather to keep at it.

Skyline Bike Park

One of the top bike parks in the world according to a few internet searches out there. With a variety of steep fast trails this places isn’t suited well for the beginner rider in my opinion. While they have an easy trail it will still require some skill and fitness to tackle this one. You can either take the Gondola up to the top or pedal up the steep road and access any of the trails. With pricing starting at $100NZ for 6 laps. We opted to do both as we spent about a week riding different areas of town. Bringing our own bikes made it easy to adjust to the trails and conditions pretty quick. It was dry and dusty a few days then wet and tacky the rest of the week. Being here in March the seasons were changing into fall. One downside of bring our own bikes was maybe not having the right one for the trails. I opted to bring my Pivot Shadowcat. at 140mm front and rear it felt a bit under biked at times on the steeper advanced trails. If you are renting a bike I would recommend checking out Vertigo Bikes.

Some of our favorite trails

There are plenty of options for jumps, tech and flow. Quick laps off the gondola make for a great day.

Coronet Peak

Just outside of town is this smaller bike park with a growing trail system. On paper it doesn’t look special. After doing some digging it has some great long tracks with lift and shuttle service available. Starting in town we got picked up around 9am loaded up and were on our way to the resort. When we got up there we made laps on the three trails off the top before taking a long lap all the way to the bottom. After a fun 6-8 mile decent we got on the shuttle and headed back up for one more long lap before heading back to town. The trails we dry as we were there in the early fall but oh so fun. With great views and a fun brewery stop on the way back to town.

Food and Drinks

So many choices so little time. Being here on vacation we went out for every lunch and dinner. There is a wide variety of things to try and honestly we didn’t have too many misses. The most famous place is Fergburger.. while it was a really good burger I have had better. The wait can be up to 1.5 hour.. we lucky waited 30 minutes. Next door was Fergbaker and honestly I though the bakery items and coffees were better and there was no line.

Other great places we enjoyed

  • Rhino Ski Bar
